Why do guys give girl's name to their cars and instruments?

About half a year ago, I asked people on my msn list this question:
“Why do guys give cars and instruments girls’ name?”
It is really interesting to see the different point of view people have in regard to this question. What’s your point of view?

uh, because the items are usually thought of as females...even females give female names to their stuff

cuz it gives them excuse to use the word "love" without feeling gay,so like "I love nancy my car". A guy can't say "I love bob my car"

um.... haha.. what is this for? i am guessing maybe cuz guys love their cars and instruments, so they can relate better to them if given a girl's name... can you "love" something that has a guy's name if you were a guy?

because it seems less gay? it's a love thing right? Most straight guys love their tools and girls...lol. personally i think it's sexist...but i guess i would give my guitar a girl's name or a unisex one.

i'm guessing cuz they're you babies and you take care of them and spend lots of time with them. it's like pouring all the affection you normally would on a girl to an object and pretending it's a girl...but if you think about it that way, it's kinda disturbing!

i think think many guys think of their cars/instrument as a companian, hence a girl name but then if that's true, what about guys who name MANY of their things girl names?

Girl 14: from a Christian stand point yes, but there are plenty of men who "bao 2 lie" out there. I think traditionally tho, many objects are given female names because women, like land or equipment, fall under the category of "properties" for men. and this naming ritual is almost a demonstration of ownership. Sad, but true in the old days...or still true in many places in the world

Me: it is sad, i thought it all started with nameing boats b/c of their grace and beauty

In that case, i think it's given a femininity because it represents something that nurtures, protects and sustain, so i think all together, this represents a mixture of types of relationships men can have with women. The mother is a figure that will always protect, care, and love. a wife is, for some guys, a companion and a partner. but for some others, women are just something men "own"
